Nothing gives genuine pleasure than respect from your rivals. Dirk Nowitzki has definitely been the subject of many huddles, video sessions and even scoldings in the San Antonio Spurs camp. The classic Texas showdowns that have been waged between two of only six champion teams since 1999 were some of the best series we’ve witnessed. Thus, any admiration amid such extended animosity would be genuine. Dirk Nowitzki is not and probably will not be Pop’s ward, so he has no reason to lie.

per Mavsblog:

Sure, Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki is a rival of the San Antonio Spurs, but that doesn’t mean he fails to appreciate their success, and head coach.

Nowitzki praised longtime San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich Thursday on 103.3′s Fitzsimmons & Durrett show [KESN-FM].

“I’m a huge Pop fan,” Nowitzki said. “He’s such a classy guy. I think he’s the best coach in the league.”

He then revealed that Popovich passed along some kind words in 2011.

Nowitzki said the first note he received after the Mavericks won the title came from Popovich. It said: “Congratulations, you deserve this moment.”

“That meant a lot to me,” Nowitzki said.
